New Hope for Kids provides services to Central Florida children during some of the most difficult and challenging times of their lives. At our Center for Grieving Children in Maitland we offer support to children ages 3 to 18 who are grieving the death of a loved one. These children come to us during a moment of extreme vulnerability - because of a death caused by illness, accident, murder or suicide - suddenly unsure of what the future holds for them. New Hope for Kids Grief Program teaches them that they are not alone and that there is hope.

Our Wishes for Kids Program improves the quality of life for children who have been diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses. These kids face isolation and educational stagnation resulting from long-term hospital or home care. Physical disabilities may also limit their mobility and access to normal learning and social opportunities. New Hope for Kids provides one very important wish as well as a long-term series of family activities for special needs kids. This gives these children hope for the future and strength to go on striving.

Kaiden doing downdog in the kitchen ;)

I hope you enjoy this video! Kaiden is my son. He'll be 16 months on September 3rd and he's already a great little yogi. We took this video about a week ago in our kitchen one night. He know's down dog very well :) Since he was a tiny baby I've always done my yoga practice at home at least once per week so he can get some exposure to the peacefulness of the practice, and the joy I get from it in my life.

Open Your Heart

Open Your Heart

By Maureen Hanusek - Director of Evening Mysore program at The Yoga Shala in Winter Park, Florida

Back bends are probably the scariest yoga poses most yogis have ever had to accomplish. And it doesn't matter whether you are binding ankles or simple pushing through a bridge pose; at any stage of the back bend it can be a difficult challenge to move into.

Why do back bends seem like such a struggle? Well I believe that the art of back bending is directly correlated to the amount of love you have in your life. Now that is not to say that someone who can bind their ankles with their hands has more love in their life than someone just learning to push their head up off the floor. What I am saying is that your ability to open your heart and to push through the physical discomfort of breaking that protective barrier around the heart is directly correlated to the way we give and receive love.

Have you ever seen someone hunched over from the shoulders, head stretched forward? Now picture their face. What does it look like? Do they seem like that they have a lot of love in their life? Probably not, as they actively protect their heart.

Picture a couple on their wedding day; the groom standing at the altar, the bride walking up the isle. What do they look like? Shoulders back, chest lifting, crown of their heads reaching to the sky. This couple is full of love, and it's obvious.

Wouldn't we rather look like the couple on their wedding day, everyday? This is what back bends teach us, to open our hearts to people, living and new experiences. But life can be disheartening. Of course it can, this is why we repeat back bends in every yoga practice. Not to mention they help wake up the central nervous system.

Our many experiences with love in our lives may have led us to heartache, and it shows in our posture and our practice. So many reasons to protect the heart, love lost whether it was a child, sibling, parent, friend, spouse or grandparent. Maybe a loved one let us down in the past. As a result we still hold on to these pieces for whatever reason.

Back bending will teach you to let go of these pieces so that we can make space for MORE love in our lives. Being able to receive infinite amounts of love into our lives, and more importantly for us to be able to give infinitely more love to everyone, especially the people who really need it. Like that hunched over acquaintance that has very little room in their heart for love. Creating this space in our hearts though back bending is difficult, but so well worth it.

Isn't this what we all live for? Isn't this what we are meant to do? Isn't LOVE the reason we were all put here on this Earth together? To LOVE one another? So don't you want to do more back bending right now? I though so. ♥

Personal Goals and Your Practice

Maureen Hanusek, August 19th, 2011

I often tell the story of a friend I met while in Mysore. She had been studying there for a few months and was working on mastering headstand, which many of us know, myself included, can take a long time and be a little scary.

She also wanted to drive a scooter. Having a scooter can give you a lot of freedom, especially in India, and it seems everyone there is driving them. I also know, from experience, that driving a scooter is also scary.

So she decided to set two goals for herself. She decided that when she was able to do headstand, she would also have the confidence to drive a scooter. And that's exactly what she did. The day she got headstand in her practice, she walked right across the street from the shala and rented a scooter. She was a great driver, and often rode me on the back of it.

Creating parallels in our practice and in our lives can help continue the momentum forward. If you create a goal for yourself in your practice, what is the goal that will propel you forth in your everyday life?

As Ashtangis we don't like to brag about our practice to others. It is something we are modest about, but at the same time, it is something to celebrate when all that hard work pays off.
Maybe you wanted that new yoga outfit. So you decide to buy it for yourself when you master marichiansana B. Maybe you have been wanting a promotion at work and decide that you will be ready for it when you master bhjuapidanasa. You may not be a good cook, but will create a great meal when you finally get supta kormasana. What if you know deep down that you want to create a relationship with someone special and believe that will happen when you master back bends?

All things are possible. Our yoga practice is like a road map for our lives. When you feel a little crappy in your practice, there's probably a little crappiness going on in your life. When you feel really good in your practice, I bet you feel really good in your life. It's all connected.
So celebrate your small victories on the mat by creating bigger ones off the mat. When you do, you will always have something to look forward to.

Mother's Day 2011 - Yoga at home with Kaiden

Ever since Kaiden was a tiny little thing, unable to even crawl, I've tried to make a point to practice at home on Sundays to be with Kaiden and expose him to the yoga practice that is such a huge part of my life. He is such a good baby, and now so used to me doing yoga around him, that he will play by himself, come over and give me kisses, and now sometimes even an adjustment or two :) Perhaps this exposure will translate to an interest in yoga some day down the line. If not at least he'll know what 'ashtanga yoga' is and what kind of stuff I do when I 'practice'.

These photos are from Mother's Day 2011 at home with Kaiden. Enjoy ;)

Yoga Stops Traffick

If you remember we did a Donation Led Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga Class at The Yoga Shala in Winter Park, Florida on March, 12th this year in order to raise money for Yoga Stops Traffick, in order to help stop human trafficking in India.

See Sean Cleere's Email Below to find out how the money collected is being used:

Dear Yoga Stops Traffickers,

We hope this email finds you all well and we would like to, once again, thank you for all your amazing efforts for YST 2011.

Amazingly, funds are still coming in from the 93 events around the world, which you organised, participated in and made such a huge success. The last count was roughly £30,000, which constitutes about two-thirds of Odanadi India's annual running costs! This is a huge achievement, so well done!

The following list should give you a better idea of the crucial ways in which your financial contributions are helping Odanadi India:

• First and foremost, a significant portion of the money raised from YST will go towards PREVENTION, a cornerstone of Odanadi's work in the fight against human trafficking. Through its 60 pioneering village vigilance committees (which cost thousands to run each year), Odanadi will be able to continue its work, educating and empowering some of the most vulnerable communities in southern India – including the Dalits and Adivasi tribal communities. There have been times when Odanadi has had to stop its crucial prevention work due to lack of funding, so this is a hugely significant achievement for them and you.

• Over £1,500 will be spent each year on rescue operations. This includes transportation costs and financial support for those rescued and reintegrated. A further £1000 pays for legal fees incurred by Odanadi as it takes action against traffickers in the courts.

£9,000 will pay for all the food for the residents at Odanadi for a year, currently 60 in total. With food inflation running at over 10% this is vital. The residents are also working to grow their own organic food and your money will also help with this.

£1,000 pays the salary of the cook for a year.

£2,000 will pay for the upkeep of the buildings at Odanadi for a year. This includes repainting large parts of the building, repairing the floor in the kitchen and fixing broken windows.

£1,500 pays for a counsellor for a year. The counsellor deals with family disputes, domestic violence issues as well as working with the residents to help with their issues and concerns.

• £2,000 pays for the education of the children. This includes materials such as book and pens and also the fees for the five residents currently studying at university. Informal education also takes place. In this picture the residents are working on a project where they say what they like at Odanadi and what they would like to do in the future. Many of them want to be doctors, teachers or social workers.

• There is also a range of other rehabilitation activity that the students also partake in, such as yoga, art therapy, ceramics, dance, drama and Karate!

• Lastly and most importantly, every remaining penny, dollar and cent will be needed for The Boys' Home Fund, which is one of Odanadi's most crucial – and ambitious – fundraising projects. The Odanadi boys currently live in temporary mud structures on a piece of land just outside Mysore. They have been waiting years to build a safe, permanent home with basic necessities such as electricity, running water, bathrooms, a kitchen, and new dormitories so Odanadi can provide a home for up to 60 more boys and young men, so many of whom are desperate need. The cost of the project is an estimated £90,000, so every penny you have raised counts!

The New Film BEGINNERS comes out July 1st but there will be a very special screening this Thursday, June 23rd at the Winter Park Village! Stop by The Yoga Shala anytime this week for complimentary passes for this Thursdays viewing at the Winter Park Village at 7:30pm.

Christopher Plummer and Ewan McGregor star as father and son in the Mike Mills-directed film.

As he tries to make sense of his parents' lives and his own reaction to growing up in a household where feelings were stifled and then to his father making himself over so late in life, Mills takes you on a tender, funny-sad journey into the messiness that is love.

A smart screenplay and captivating visual devices deliver genuine emotions in Beginners, a highly personal exploration into the mysteries of love by filmmaker, artist and graphic designerMike Mills (Thumbsucker). The story is about a man who, like Mills, only learns his father is gay upon the death of his mother. The father comes out to live an aggressively gay and joyous lifestyle ever so briefly before dying of cancer a few years later.

Any marketing campaign will have to emphasize that Beginners is not about being gay or straight but rather about the emotional risks one must hazard for love. The story, all along, is about the son, not the father. The father's new life is an eye-opener not because of his sexuality but because of his willingness to take risks for love.

Ewan McGregor plays 38-year-old Oliver with sadness and bewilderment. His parents' marriage was not loveless but possessed a settled complacency that wrung any passion out of love. This is Oliver's only model for love. In past relationships, he has followed this model right up to the point where he leaves or lets love fall apart.

His father Hal, played by an energetic, twinkle-eyed Christopher Plummer, suddenly presents him with a new model. In what little time he will have left, the father tries to show the son how valuable each passing moment of life truly is, but time runs out before the lesson is fully absorbed.

Now, having inherited his dad's Jack Russell terrier and much confusion, he meets a French actress, Anna (Melanie Laurent of Inglourious Basterds), who is only in Los Angeles for a while. She shakes Oliver out of his sadness -- he falls in love, in fact -- but which model will he follow, the father he grew up with or older man who so baffled him? To make matters worse, Anna too is prone to find ways out of love.

The film takes place in no fixed point in time. The present, past and distant past in scenes between young Oliver and his frustrated mother come in the order Mills thinks will best chart his alter ego's journey. Like the filmmaker, Oliver is a graphic artist so his doodles, sketches and even graffiti illustrate the character's growing self-awareness. So do his conversations with the dog, although the dog's dialogue must, of course, be delivered through subtitles.

Indeed Beginners plays with all sorts of cinematic conventions from a silent-movie first meeting between Oliver and Anna -- she has laryngitis so she communicates with gestures and a note pad -- to sketches and slide shows Oliver arranges to illustrate his mental process in working out the nature of life and love.

All the movie's playfulness rubs off on the actors. Scenes crackle with life. The chemistry among all the actors is terrific. In some scenes, you can just feel the characters hold back and then release a flood of emotions as they tiptoe through the treacherous terrain of unexpected feelings.

The film makes good use of unfamiliar L.A. locations around the Silverlake and Griffith Park areas. The music, credited to several people, often comes simply from a piano, a bit of whimsy mixed with melancholy, while Kasper Tuxen's cinematography and Shane Valentino's production design capture the constantly shifting moods of this tale about people who are just beginning to understand love.
