Donation Yoga Class - Saturday, March 12th at The Yoga Shala in Winter Park, Florida

Every Saturday from 11:00-12:00pm, The Yoga Shala in Winter Park hold a donation only yoga class.

100% of proceeds benefit a non-profit organization in need. On Saturday, March 12th our Donation yoga class will focus on Odanadi, and Yoga Stops Traffick - a non-profit organization in India focused on helping to stop human trafficking in India.

YOGA STOPS TRAFFICK is a global yoga event being held on March 12th 2011 in more than 80 locations around the world, to raise awareness about human trafficking and show support to its millions of victims. All proceeds will be donated to Mysore anti-trafficking organization, Odanadi Seva Trust.

ONE DAY, ONE VOICE is our ethos. Last year’s founding event was led by a group of young Odanadi residents from the entrance gates of the iconic Mysore Palace – many of whom are survivors of slavery, domestic abuse and forced prostitution. Through the common language of yoga, 1,500 people around the world rolled out their mats in homes, beaches and mountaintops on the same day, in support of Odanadi’s work. And so from the home of Ashtanga Yoga, a worldwide event was born.

ASHTANGA YOGA is of huge significance to the young people of Odanadi. As part of their groundbreaking rehabilitation program, it has allowed them to reclaim their bodies: build physical and mental strength, and restore a sense of peace, confidence and self-worth.

UNITED AGAINST HUMAN TRAFFICKINGBy standing alongside Odanadi on March 12th, you will be demonstrating your solidarity and support for them, as well as sending a message of defiance against the serious, rapidly escalating exploitation of women and children in India – and around the world.

This unique event has already generated enormous international support, with YST events taking place in London, New York, Miami, Orlando, Washington, Rome, Barcelona, Sydney, Osaka, Bangkok, Vancouver and Sao Paulo – to name a few!

Odanadi co-founders Stanly K.V. and Parashuram M.L. say that, “when human relationships begin, cooperation and coordination begins”. Stanly says: “Yoga Stops Traffick is paving the way for the creation of new relationships across the globe. By promoting our mission at an international level we will be able to do more than we ever thought possible."

Parashuram adds: "We may not share the same culture, language or grass roots problems, but Yoga Stops Traffick shows that human suffering transcends these differences. Humanity is our common ground and the more people learn about our work, the more things will change."

There is a SUGGESTED donation amount of $20.00. Please call Krista 407.506.4626 to register and save your spot! Krista Shirley will be donating her time teaching this led Ashtanga class to benefit this wonderful organization.

11:30-1:30 PM Workshop/Lecture: Sex - A Deeper Perspective
Sex is certainly one of the most essential of human activities. Sexual activity, whether with others or by ourselves and the thoughts that accompany our feelings about sex dominate much of our time. Yet, for the most part, we are confused and befuddled by this area of life, perhaps more than any other. Many people have experienced some form of trauma in this area of their lives and very few people have the courage to talk openly about this area of life. In this session, we will begin with a yogic perspective on sex and begin to explore just what sex is and how we can begin to understand it in a way that it actually becomes an empowering part of life and not one that only causes us frustration and trouble.

Monday-Friday Morning Mysore: 7:30-9:30am

Monday, Wednesday, Friday evening lecture: 7:00-8:30pm

This week long workshop/practitioner intensive includes morning Mysore practice with an intimate group of students and evening lectures.

Making Magic And Real Love Through Family And Community
There are few other places in life where we express our highest aspirations and deepest fears than in the way that move within our families and communities. More emotionally and spiritually evolved people almost always express themselves through building and facilitating strong, honest and loving families and communities around themselves. In this session, we will explore some of the elements that can help us to reflect ourselves more clearly through our relationships with our families and communities. United we rise, divided, we fall. Let us all begin the process of being agents of unification and empowerment. By transforming your relationships with your family and community, you transform your relationship to yourself and to God above.

Unlocking The Secrets Of The Mind
Our understanding and awareness of, or lack thereof, our own minds holds the power to radically affect the quality of our lives. During this session, we will talk at length about this mysterious part of ourselves, including questions such as "What is the mind?", "Where exactly is the mind located", "How does the mind work?", "How can I improve the quality of my mind?" and other relevant topics related to the mind. Perhaps one of the biggest first steps to a much deeper and more powerful yoga practice and life is to begin to understand the mind. This session will be a first step to move your understanding in the right direction.

The True Role Of The Guru Or Teacher
In this modern age of yoga practice, the role of the teacher or Guru is often misunderstood or under appreciated. Yet, in traditional yoga practice in India, the role of the teacher or Guru is given the greatest importance. In this session, we will delve into why the role of the teacher or Guru is given such great importance. There is a hidden key to the more profound depths of practice that is held within the kind of relationship that we build with our teacher or teachers. What we will discuss will shed much light on your understanding of yourself, your practice and of life. Living Social

If you have been thinking about trying Ashtanga Yoga with us at The Yoga Shala in Winter Park, Florida - today is the day to do it! For today only, you can purchase a month of unlimited classes ($160.00 value), or our beginner series for ONLY $39.00. This is a very inexpensive way to check out The Yoga Shala, our programs, classes, and boutique. Time is limited so be sure to go to Living Social's website to snag your deal! You will be glad you did!

Here a just a couple things some students have to say about The Yoga Shala:

I want you to know that I am so grateful for my new found personal practice. I wouldn't have it without the Ashtanga Vinyasa Mysore method, you and The Shala. It has been an amazing gift to my life....a gift that will keep on giving :) You truly are wonderful. I look forward to a long future of learning from you. Thank you thank you thank you.
Always, Heather

I am a 56 year-old man who, on most days, can touch my toes without bending my knees, do a backbend when I really want to, stand on my head when properly motivated, and very occasionally, when I am feeling particularly limber and lucky, get into Lotus position. I could not do all of these things when I was 48 and began practicing Ashtanga Yoga. That I can do them at all is largely a testament to Krista Shirley's patience and extreme talent as a teacher. The thing I find most appealing about Krista as a teacher is her ability to teach, and relate at a deep level to, not only the students for whom yoga is more a lifestyle and a life philosophy, but also the students like me – 56 years old but not looking a day older than say 54 – for whom yoga is not a lifestyle or a philosophy, but instead a form of exercise, albeit a wonderful and ever-intriguing form of exercise. She teaches in such a way that, no matter where the student is on the yoga spectrum – beginner, seasoned veteran, dedicated lifer, or a duffer like me – they want to keep coming to class, and want to keep learning more from this wonderfully gifted teacher and friend.

- Ed F.

I just want to tell you the shala is a wonderful, welcoming, warm place and I cherish the opportunity to study with you and the other instructors!

Namaste ,

Claire

What a wonderful way to start the day! Thank you for your time and attention this morning. It's amazing to have all that great breathing in one room, and amazing to see all those people practicing on their own...together. You're doing good work!
- Jeanne K.

Dear Krista,

Thank you for making my yoga practice so enjoyable. You really know how to instill confidence and motivate your students. You have great karma. Namaste.

- Pat

I am particularly fascinated with the mysore method . I only wish I had learned this way from the outset instead of in led classes and I would love to learn more about it.

- Chris

The Yoga Shala is a rare find when it comes to yoga studios. It has the perfect balance of community and personal practice. Krista helped me build a personalized practice that not only fit my schedule, but my lifestyle.

- Nikki

Krista is a knowledge powerhouse when it comes to the Mysore method. As I was in the beginning stages of my practice, she spent time with me making sure that I thoroughly understood everything.

-Billy M

I've been going to The Yoga Shala for about 6 months and my practice has improved dramatically. I have more energy and my concentration and focus have been positively impacted.

-Stephanie

Krista is a great mentor when it comes to my practice. She's friendly, helpful and makes you feel comfortable. I really liked that The Yoga Shala community is welcoming of newcomers and always willing to help.

- Kelly

Practice was great today , you really are very very good at what you do and I am blessed to have found you and the shala!

-Clare

Since I started going to the yoga shala, my practice has become one of the best parts of my day. While my health has improved, its also helped me focus on whats important to me, and I really enjoy the dedication of the community at the Yoga Shala. It's different from other yoga studios because the practice is very personal, and I like practicing with people who are so dedicated to the traditional form of ashtanga yoga.

- Benjamin

I chose the Yoga Shala because the Mysore program really makes the yoga practice YOUR practice. Mysore allows you, the practitioner, to completely own your own practice. If you want to work on a asana, hold the pose longer, repeat the pose to get a deeper understanding you can. It's your practice. You can move at your own pace, thus getting the most out of your practice. The instructors are there to guide and assist you but you are responsible for your own practice. This makes the practice more personal and infinitely more fulfilling.

- Mike M.

Since I have been coming to the Yoga Shala, I have only seen positive changes in myself physically, mentally, and spiritually. The Yoga Shala teaches you that yoga is not just about the postures, but an exploration of your inner self. Through the Mysore style I am discovering self-discipline, humility, focus, and inner strength. Because of my experience at the Yoga Shala, I have now made my yoga practice a lifetime journey.

- Stephanie Z.

The Yoga Shala is the best place to begin a lifetime practice in Ashtanga yoga. My experience at the Shala has been nothing short of miraculously transformative. Sati was the first person I talked to at the shala and she immediately welcomed me and right away I felt a connection with place. I started my first week and I met Krista in a morning class (They have classes all throughout the day which really helps with a crazy schedule... amazing!) and I felt that she understood my fears of trying to do anything at all. The staff is very supportive and informative and they help your mind and your body connect. You might walk out of there with sore muscles you didn't know existed, but you'll still be feeling fresh, vibrant and alive. My life had dramatically changed since I started my practice at the Shala, almost one year ago. I recommend anyone, no matter who you are, if you are interested in yoga you need to take one full week at the Shala. It's only the beginning.

- Dennie

To me the ashtanga practice is a spiritual one. The fact that's it happens to be physical exercise I've managed to stick with for over a year is a side benefit (and also a miracle - as i'm a couch potato). In these changing times, a regular spiritual practice is highly important and I've found ashtanga yoga to be one of the most fullfilling for me on all levels. It's a spiritual practice expressing through the physical body which is ideal as all aspects of the self are integrated; as opposed to just doing 40 day meditation practices or breath work. the ashtanga practice is fast become the main daily priority that I consicously choose, not just some random exercise routine I 'have' to go do. Attending the Shala helps me keep the practice on track and helps me progress.

- Emily L.

I started with a little apprehension as I felt this style a little too aggressive to what I am used to. I really liked the structure and the yoga instructors here are excellent. You have done a excellent job with the center.

- Madhu

Overwhelment

I had a conversation with a friend of mine yesterday about feeling overwhelmed. I'm back to work, Kaiden is 2 1/2 months old and I'm trying to figure out how to run my business, teach my classes, maintain my relationship with my partner, keep my house clean, and be a good mother to my son...oh and find a little time for myself too. I'm truly happier than I've been my entire life but also busier and pulled in more directions. I know time will help me figure out balance for it all but at this moment in time the only word that can describe how I feel is, "Overwhelmed!"

After I chatted with Gaby yesterday she emailed me this quote:
"Overwhelment is about you not being up to speed with what you told the Universe what you want. The Universe is yielding to you. You're just not ready to receive it right now."

Please Help the McKinsey Family

Please help this loving family recover once again from the tragic loss of a child. If you can not help, maybe you know someone who can.

http://www.giveforward.org/AngelBabies/?preview=4625

The McKinsey Family Story:
At the tender age of 26, no married couple should have to suffer as many losses as the McKinsey family. On May 15, 2010, Evan Navarro was born in to Heaven at 21 weeks 3 days gestation weighing 14.5 oz & 10.5" long. This happened because of an incompetent cervix (the cervix cannot support the weight of the pregnancy).

Unfortunately, this is not Brandi & David's first loss. In August of 2007, their identical twin boys were born still due to being nonviable conjoined twins. After this loss, Brandi & David struggled with infertility & tried medical intervention to get pregnant. Not being successful in their attempts, they were ready to resign themselves to God & adopt a baby.

One last attempt with medical intervention yielded them another pregnancy & rejoicing in God's light, they were so excited. Once again, this pregnancy did not make it to term. Brandi miscarried in the 1st trimester in November 2009.

Going forward with adoption, Brandi & David had a home study completed in January 2010 & were approved immediately for adoption. They started the long process. During this time, it was God's will for the McKinsey's to once again find themselves expecting a miracle. The pregnancy started roughly but smoothed out for a time. Both were able to enjoy Evan kick & move. They planned the nursery for 2 babies, Evan & their soon to be adopted son whom they would call Brewer.

Things took a turn for the worse on May 13th. Brandi started spotting & immediately went to Labor & Delivery. There she found out that Evan's bag of water was bulging. He was half way in to the birth canal & there was not much hope that he would last long enough to have a fighting chance at life.

After a courageous two day battle, Brandi became very ill with pneumonia & a partially collapsed lung. There was only one way to make her better, deliver Evan. Holding on to those last precious moments feeling him moving, the decision was made. At 3:45 pm, Evan was born.

4 losses, 3 stillborns & 1 miscarriage. Barely married 3 years & for a couple to have to endure this, it is just not the way things are suppose to be. Paying for yet another funeral for a child that should be in their home playing, to bury a child, is not the natural order of life.

Thank you all for your donations!!!

Kino MacGregor

Kino MacGregor will be doing a weekend workshop in Orlando, Florida this weekend (May 22-23rd) at The Yoga Shala! The workshop is now sold out. We are really excited to bring this dedicated Ashtanga yogini to our yoga school to share her knowledge and passion with our students. If you have missed this opportunity to work with her this weekend do not fear she will be back again in the near future.

Kino MacGregor Weekend Workshop at The Yoga Shala in Winter Park, Florida
May 22-23, 2010
Saturday May 22
10 AM - 12 PM Guided Full Primary
2 - 4 PM Workshop: Inversions, Handstanding & the Art of Balance: Turning yourself upside down challenges the body’s sense of spatial orientation, the limits of physical strength and the mind’s outer edges of fear. In this class you will learn to approach inversions with sound anatomical principles, an open mind, excitement and fun. You will experience first hand that it takes much more than brute strength to steady yourself on your hands. You will see how easy it really is to let yourself slide into postures, positions and inversions that you think are impossible with just the slightest change of perspective. Everything from shoulderstand to downward dog to handstand is part of the game.

Sunday May 23
8 AM - 10AM Mysore Style
12 PM - 2 PM Workshop: Lengthen the Hamstrings, Relax the Hips: Unlock the secret to open hips and long hamstrings and solve the riddle of these two seemingly incorrigible areas of the body. Without your hamstrings and hips in place the yoga practice sometimes feels like a dead end with no hope in sight. Turn that thought around in this fun, practical approach to working with your legs, hips and pelvis. This workshop gives you the foundation for healthy forward bending, easy hip rotation and a new understanding of your legs. Delve into the inner world with solid anatomical explanations, easy-to-apply techniques and in-depth understanding.

Kaiden May 9th-20th

I hope you enjoy these pictures of Kaiden :) They were taken between May 9th and May 20th. He is such an amazing little baby. He's very healthy, really sweet, and down right gorgeous :) I feel so very blessed to have him in my life; I want to be the best mother I can be to him so he can grow up knowing that he can do anything he sets his mind to!
